Their Story

Mata I Coloma is a 5 hectare farm in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, a small town in Penedès. This is Cava country but the wines of owner Pere Mata are anything but your standard Cava. Pere does all his work by hand. He farms organically working with the indigenous grape varieties Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada. The vines are planted at a density of 3,000 vines per hectare over a terroir of limestone, sand, and clay. The vines range in age between 25-35 years old with roots deeply penetrated in the soil.

In the cellar, Pere only uses the free run juice with primary fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks and secondary fermentation in bottles. The wines all spend 2-4 years on their lees. These are Champagne quality Cavas and while Pere may not admit his inspiration to be Champagne, many see him in Cava to be what Cédric Bouchard is to Champagne, a master of terroir; elegant and precise wines of place. In fact Bouchard commented on Pere’s Cavas saying, “these could hold their own in a tasting with Champagnes.”

Also viewed by many as a type of “Mad Scientist”, Pere strives to improve the quality of his wines. He tweaks the Cupada cuvée as it is constantly evolving. He started with Cupada N°1 and is up to N°20 (which we are currently importing).
